FUNAAB workers protest suspension of union leaders

The peaceful atmosphere at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, was disrupted on Wednesday when  members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities of the institution staged a protest.
They protested against the indefinite suspension of their chairman, Abdul-Subour Salaam and his Secretary, Olurotimi Fasunwa, by the institution’s management.
The lecturers were surprised that Salaam and Fasunwa,  who were recently recalled from suspension by the management of the institution,  over issues bordering on the administration of the university, were placed on an indefinite suspension.
The members alleged that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bamidele Oyewole, was victimising and threatening their leaders as well as trying to ‎cripple the activities of the SSANU in the institution, describing the suspension as “unjustifiable.”
The protest led to serious traffic in the area, forcing the authorities of the institution to open the school’s second entrance.
The union members, displayed placards with various inscriptions such as ‘Our chairman is not guilty’, ‘We say no to wickedness’, and ‘Free our chairman.’
In her remark during the protest, the Vice-Chairman of the union, Bola Magbagbeade, said the struggle was not only because of the suspended Chairman and Secretary of the union but to liberate the soul of the union which the management of the institution wanted to cage.
A national leader of the union, Mr. Wale Akinremi, who addressed the protesters, urged them to see the exercise as a collective struggle and an attempt to counter the moves by managemment of the university to incapacitate leaders and members of SSANU.
